Oak to Bespoke

Transforming Oak Kitchens Across the West Midlands

If you have an oak or “bare” wood kitchen that’s served you well over the years but is starting to look a little tired, my “Oak to Bespoke” service may be just what you’re looking for. I’m passionate about helping homeowners across the West Midlands – from Staffordshire, Shropshire, Worcestershire, Herefordshire, Warwickshire and Birmingham – breathe new life into their old kitchens by transforming the look of their existing oak cabinets with a flawless hand-painted finish.

What Is Oak to Bespoke?

Oak to Bespoke is a highly specialised process that’s all about turning an existing oak kitchen into a truly bespoke space. Rather than replacing sturdy, well-built cabinetry, I work with what’s already there, using expert hand-painting techniques to achieve a beautiful, custom finish. This approach allows you to get the high-end look and feel of a bespoke kitchen without the costs, waste, or disruption of a complete renovation.

But painting oak isn’t like painting any other surface. Oak has its own character, with a strong wood grain and natural tannins that can impact the paint finish. My process involves meticulous preparation, priming, and painting techniques that bring out the beauty of the wood without any of the challenges you might face with a standard painting approach. That’s why I say Oak to Bespoke requires a skill set beyond that of a general painter – it’s a craft and a skill I’m proud to have honed over many years.

My Process: A Step-by-Step Transformation

Here’s what the Oak to Bespoke journey looks like:

  1. Consultation and Design Selection:
Every kitchen is different, and every client has their own vision. I start by discussing the look you want to achieve, from colour schemes to finishes, offering expert advice to ensure the colours and tones will truly suit your space. Together, we’ll create a plan that transforms your kitchen into a beautiful, personal space.
  2. Preparation and Cleaning:
Prep work is critical in creating a high-quality, long-lasting finish. I carefully remove, label, and clean every door and drawer to ensure a clean surface. Each surface is then sanded to allow the paint to adhere beautifully and evenly.
  3. Priming for Perfection:
I use specialised primers that are perfectly suited for oak, sealing the natural grain and creating a smooth, solid base for the paint. This step is essential for achieving a flawless finish that will last – skipping it simply isn’t an option if you want professional results.
  4. Expert Hand-Painting:
Once primed, I apply the paint by hand (brush), using tried-and-true techniques that almost eliminate brush strokes, giving the cabinets a sleek, flawless, professional look. My preferred paints are durable, eco-friendly, and specially selected for their longevity, so you can enjoy the results for years to come. I can even add a lacquer finish, if you are concerned with extra wipability on dark matte colours.
